One area where NRM is always looking to improve our service offering is where we are able provide our services. While large, regional utility companies that serve hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of customers cover a large swath of territory in most places, they don’t reach everyone. Some small businesses are in areas where local municipalities or energy co-ops are in charge of the electric supply.
Iconic Biederman’s Deli and Chase St. Market in Plymouth, NH are two such small businesses. They are customers of the New Hampshire Electric Co-Op opposed to a giant utility like an Eversource or National Grid. But just because this utility provider doesn’t have the corporate might of some other utilities it doesn’t mean they’re not able to invest in energy efficiency programs for their customers.
Through the NHSaves program, NRM has delivered consistent results for customers of NHECO with walk-in coolers and freezers for over a decade. Scott Biederman and his wife, Patti, have been been seeing such results since 2006 with our controls solution.
It was the fact that their utility company backed the solution that gave them the confidence to pursue the project—the utility is not going to stick their name behind something that doesn’t work. And in the end, the Biedermans were very happy they did.
They’ve been saving money on their electric bill every month since the initial installation, but it’s been the mechanical improvements that they’ve grown to love most about the solution. For example, the noise reduction in their workplace with the evaporator fans no longer running 100% of the time. Everyone from customers to staff appreciated this unexpected benefit. The Biedermans also like having the enhanced control over their temperatures—it’s critical their fresh meats and other cold products maintain their required temps for food safety.
All in all, they’ve been very pleased with NRM’s solution but more importantly with the efforts of their utility company to provide something back to their customers through these programs to reduce their electric bill. The Biedermans feel anyone in NHECO that has refrigeration should take advantage of this.
